Zipp 2007, last part

TANGENTE tires

Beside the dimpled hubs we spoke about in these articles (1, 2, 3 ), Zipp has worked as well on tires which will save from 1 to 3 Watts compared to the faster tires available according to their own tests.

The clinchers or tubulars come from Vittoria and are based upon the Corsa CX with 290TPI, they are dimpled and their size is 21mm. They are the result of a 14 months collaboration with the italian tire maker.
The gain of 3 Watts maximum is got with the rims of the 404 or 808 wheelsets, it goes down to 2 Watts with the 303 depending on the angle the wind arrive on the tire/rim couple of course. Zipp claims that one can save some power while using these tires with any rim.

According to Josh, Zipp engineer, " the dimples add essentially no stress into the thread […] so the predicted wear and crack resistance with the age of the tire was dramatically decreased"

The tested tires proved a good grip on both dry and wet roads, synonym of a perfect race tire. they are said to be available from October the first.
Not yet informations regarding the rolling resistance but they will certainly be close to the Corsa CX
tested  HERE as among the best.

ZEDTECH program

Zipp seems to be a little inspired in custom hand craft wheels and launches for 2007 a custom wheels program.
Thus, many hubs, rims and nipples will be available.

You will be able to choose between the classic hubs or the dimpled ones, in silver, black or grey anodized colors, the ceramic bearings can be used if you want according to your budget and your ambitions.

Four differents Zipp logos on the rims and the spoke cross can be chosen too.
Two extra kind of rims are offered, the SL which are enlightened and the SS reinforced. There will have five differents nipples colors to have an only pair of wheels.

Pneumatiques TANGENTE

The last year, Corima have released two new products. The first one was the Turbospoke wheel and the second was the Aéro rim using a new 12K carbon weave.

For 2007, Corima has let the Astana riders using wheels spinning on new hubs made out of carbon this time. The fiber is similar to the Aéro rim and so we hope the weight will be lower as well.

Thanks to ALFUS again for the pictures from the Vuelta.

Beside, Corima will present soon a Cyclocross wheelset based upon Winium rims. Nothing really new behind these new wheels but they may be reinforced to be strong enough for the Cross.

EDIT: Here are the pictures of the new Cyclo-cross wheels thanks to Antoine:

The Cross wheels are indeed based upon Winium rims but with external nipples to make the truing procedure easier. The front wheel has 18 round spokes while the rear one has got 24 of them.

Temple Cycles 5th anniversary bike [fr]

Temple Cycles 5th anniversary bike

This year, Temple Cycles has worked on two project that will be presented for the salon of the Interbike taking place in Las Vegas in some days.
Both bicycles have required a phenomenal amount of work and the one presented in this article is very special since it is the prototype of the Fifth Anniversary Limited Edition that will then introduce the Limited Edition.

The bike looks very classy with a lot of handcraft work.
Many parts are plated with copper, some are gilded or anodized, a few are painted or coated. This makes the bike very special.

The overall weight wasn’t the main goal, "Copper is not light, even when it’s thin it adds up quickly" said Lance Johnson, president of Groupe de tête.
Yet, the bike is anyway still in the light weight bike range with only 13.5 pounds.

Differences between this bike and the Limited Edition will be minor, there will have a hand scripting on the seat stays saying "Limited Edition – One of the five" and across the top tube "In Celebration of our Fifth Anniversary". Beside these extras, each frame will be signed and the headbadge will have a sapphire sit in it.

Here is a descriptive of the parts used to build the bike:

Eurobike 6; FSA, URSUS, American Classic, Reynolds

This article is mostly about new wheels.

First, we have seen a lot of alloy magnesium rims at the Eurobike. It seems the Magnesium is becoming the new high end material for light rims.

FSA showed a Mg rim at its stand, the wheelset is called FSA RD-440 Magnesium, the rim is medium depth and is for clincher:

Ths hubs are spinning with ceramic bearings:

The RD-440 Magensium wheelset hits the scale with 1380gr.

URSUS has got as well a Magnesium rim, it’s an alloy one that results of a very close cooperation which lasted some years with an important Faculty Of materials Engineering. The Mg in the rim is 96% of the materials composing it. For solving corrosion and wear problems, a particular coating has been used: the DELTA8®. It transforms surfaces in a complex ceramic matrix through passage of bipolar electric impulses.

The wheelset is claimed to be 1290gr with 20/24 spokes.

American Classic already had a Magnesium rim the last years with the Mag300 weighting just a bit more than 300gr for Clinchers. In 2007, the brand is coming with a tubular rim made out of Magnesium again for just 270gr. The wheelset will then be over 1105gr with 28/32 spokes.

The brand has made too a new large flange front hub. It’s for MTB and road and weights 105gr.

About Reynolds, the Attack is one of their new model, it’s a carbon clincher rim that weights 1487gr with 20/24 spokes. The rim depth is 32mm and the hubs are now the famous and super reliable DT 240s.

Reynolds comes too with a Carbon mountain bike rim. The wheelset made out of this rim is the Topo C and T for Clincher and Tubular. It’s 32mm deep, the clincher wheelset is 1588gr while the tubular version is 1352gr.

Eurobike 4; DtSwiss, TUNE

For this fourth article about the Eurobike, we would like to show some new wheels parts and new wheels.

Dt Swiss

A new hub is coming from Dt Swiss. The 240s hubs are already top range this year but they’re unfortunately quite heavy compared to some others brands.

For 2007, the 190 Ceramic will be available for road and mountain bikes. The front hub will come with either 20, 24, 28, 32 holes and will be adapted for radial lacing. Its weight will be 105gr ± 5%.
The rear version will be different for Campagnolo and Shimano. The shape of the left side of the hub body will change slightly to attain the perfect flange geometry and offer the maximum stiffness for both 10-speed Shimano and 9/10-speed Campagnolo. It will come with 24, 28, 32 holes. The weight will be 195gr ± 5% for Campagnolo and 190gr ± 5% for Shimano.

This new hub is interesting because it is the first time Dt Swiss is going to use ceramic bearings in its hubs. The ceramic bearings will be very high quality and so the price of the hubset will be twice the 240s.

Dt Swiss is coming with a new quick release system. Its patent is pending. These new quick releases will be used as a simple bolt.
The RWS system is very easy to use, one have to tighten up the system by turning the lever clockwise by hand as firm as possible then put the lever in the optimal position and the wheel is mounted firm and safe. It has got up to 50% more clamping force than common quick release systems.
It will be available as three differents version, one for road, one for MTB and another one with a 9mm axle for the front and 10mm for the rear. This last version has to be used with the DT Swiss "thru bolt"hub.
The lightest version of the RWS System is the Road titan, it’s 36gr front and 39gr rear. It uses AL6/V4 grade 5 titanium for the axles.

A picture of the new RR1850 wheels is following:

The rims remain unchanged:

TUNE

Tune won’t change really its range for 2007. Some nice hubs were exposed at their stand.

The Mag150 will be available as a spare hub for 579euros, it weights 158gr.

Its enlightened version called the Mag140 will be kept for the Skyline wheels.

The Mig45 will finally be available as a spare part as well for almost 200euros and just 48gr.

We could find a rear mountain bike hub for disc that seems totally new. The Torsten is not in their 2007 range yet. This hub has got carbon layers inside the flanges just like the Mag140 or the Mag150.

Finally some customs hubs were presented on the stand:

We once could already see a custom work of that kind on a mountain bike wheel two years ago if my memory serves.

Eurobike 1; Lightweight

The first stand we went when arriving at the Messe in Friedrichshafen was the Lightweight stand. We knew that they had some updated wheels and wanted to have a look at them.

The high profile rims have been enlightened and the wheelsets are now 60gr lighter, furthermore every wheels stiffness is now 14% higher.
Lightweight Generation 2 wheels are definitely becoming the most all around sets.

Standard II
Spokes Weight
12-20 1060gr
16-20 1075gr
20-20 1090gr

Obermayer II

Spokes Weight
12-20 960gr
16-20 975gr
20-20 990gr

L’Alpe d’Huez II

Spokes Max. weight
20-20 970gr

The Lightweight Disc PRO wheel was as well presented, it has a honeycomb structure. The stiffness is 40% higher than the Disc TUNE / DT version. On the other hand it is 90gr heavier. The TUNE / DT version uses foam which explains the lighter weight.

CarbonSports had got a nice new wheel to show as well.
It is a special version of the Ventoux wheel with an external 6K weave and a 3K structure. It looks very nice and it is 10gr lighter than the normal version.

Its hub is using unidirectional carbon weave.

Finally, we asked about the rear derailleur that was announced the last year at the Eurobike. Unfortunately the design wasn’t good enough and the carbon derailleur couldn’t hold well. So the engineers at Lightweight are working on a totally new design to make it very reliable. They have made one in aluminium that weights around 150gr. The weight is not important at this point since it’s only one of the first prototype using the new design.

Last design

New design

We have a few more exclusivities about CarbonSports and so we will let you know soon what they are.

Eurobike 2; Kuota, Xentis, Wave

For 2007 KUOTA comes with a new superlight frame that weights between 850 and 900gr. It’s called KOM for King of Mountain, it uses a monocoque triangle, different lamination, KUOTA Nano Technology carbon fibers and a bottom bracket with an improved section.

There is a project on the KREDO to make the SRM powermeter integrated in the frameset, here are the pictures:

The K-FACTOR, KSANO, KEBEL and KHARMA are coming with a new red paint as well. They will thus be available in two different paint themes, black and red.

KUOTA has got for 2007 cranksets which have a useful system to increase or decrease the crank length. It’s called ALS and one can change the length at 170 or 175mm. It’s coming in two versions, one with steel axle and another one with titanium axle.

XENTIS is coming with a new TT wheel and a new MTB wheel.

They have made TT bar extenders too.

Wave is a brand that will be selling a very nice bike using 12K carbon fiber.

Stealth bikes

This is a very classy build, very light, and very fast I chose to present you today. Destinated to a light rider, the low spoke number will however be enough. The very light hubs are both turning on carbon axles.

Front wheel:

The TUNE Mig45 front hub ( 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) requires straight pull spokes and some tips to place them. One have to tap out the carbon axle, disassemble the flanges and their bearings in order to place the spokes in the flange then put back the axle while tapping it into the bearing/flange combination. Thus the other flange can be placed with its spokes. The hub won’t be retail available and I understand why! 😉
The bearings are made out of steel, I thought they would have come with ceramic ones.
Spokes are Cx-ray, nipples are made out of alloy, they’re stock ones from Sapim, the rim is a Corima aéro with 18 holes.

Total weight: 505gr

Rear wheel:

The rear wheel is spinning upon a TUNE Mag160 with carbon axle. As usually the bearings are tight and need some breaking in to spin the best as they can. The rear wheel has got 20 Cx-ray 2 times crossed, the drive side nipples are brass while the non drive side ones are made out of alloy from Sapim.

Scott 2007 [en]

After multiple researches to find some pictures about the new Scott 2007 range, I could finally find some on JulMTB forum. Jeff from Starbike share with us some spy shots of the new Addict LTD.

The range is changed but the CR1 will still exists and will be cheaper at 1700€ for the frame.

The Addict LTD frame is super light with only 790gr claimed in medium size (54) with integrated seatpost.
Three differents versions and a limited one will be produced, the version with standard seatpost has been weighted and hit the scale with 815gr in size 56 with 4 bottle cages screws and a seat collar. The fork claimed to be 290gr is actually close to 304gr.
The frames are now all carbon and don’t use alloy anymore around the headtube or the dropouts as the current CR1. The front triangle is made in one piece and Scott has patented the IMP (integrated molding process). We’re currently lacking informations about this process but we will know more soon.
The Addict range geometry is new while the CR1 one stay unchanged.

Scott 2007

Cofidis team is racing on the Tour de France with very special Mavic wheels, Roues Artisanales could get thanks to a reader a picture of the prototype used by some lucky riders.

This wheel whose carbon weave is 12K as Corima aéro 2006 is however different of the wheels used by Cofidis using a flatter rim and a 3K carbon weave. The advantage is the weight since a 3K carbon fiber square meter is 175gr while the same area of 12K carbon fiber is close to 205/210gr. 3K price is 50% more expensive than the 12K that is as well 50% more resistant. A priori the wheels we can see at the Tour de France are lighter and less resistant than the one tested before.

The last year, in this article (only in french) we criticized Mavic that seemed very late concerning  the weight of its wheels and the real updates. It seems the company is reacting the best as possible with this wheelset looking like Lightweight wheels. Have a look at this close shot from a picture belonging to Tdwsports.

We hope to see these wheels soon in shop at an interesting price.

Zipp

For this second part of the article, we present you this weird Zipp disk wheel. At the moment we don’t have a lot of informations about it but one can notice that it seems to be built upon a normal rim where a fairing has been added to make a disk wheel.

Is this a new wheel for 2007? A wheel again faster than the current ones? We’ll know soon.

EDIT: this is actually the new 2006 clincher disk wheel.

Weightweenies forum is full of informations everywhere. We there found a very nice picture of the dimpled hub we already talked about in this article.

Pezcyclingnews also got some informations about the lenticulars wheels that will use dimpled "cones".

There are a lot of reactions concerning the dimples on the hubs (saving 3W maximum according to ZIpp) but only a few of them are on the american brand behalf.

Orbea

A last thing,  Foromtb has been kind enough to send us a picture of the Orbéa Orca 2007 with a little higher quality than the one exposed in this article.

Mavic Full Carbon, 2nd part

Some days ago, a picture of a rider from Aix en Provence team using the latest Mavic Full Carbone wheels has been plugged in.
The doubts regarding the general look and its structure are over now, so it’s now possible to show you the pictures of the wheels with no risk. Thanks to an awesome work realized through Photoshop by Skyleth, we will present you as well the wheel in show version  🙂

The prototypes built by Mavic are numerous but the following wheels should be close to the reality:

Skyleth‘s work;

About its look, the rim looks a lot like a Corima aéro 2006, the weave is identical while the kevlar spokes are black and the hub is made out of carbon as the Lightweight. Overall weight seem to be around 1150gr as previously announced in cette brève.

The rumours announce the wheels to be visible for the mountain stages of the Tour de France, we hope as you it will be the case and these wheels will win stages!

EDIT 21:30:00; today at the first mountain stage, the whole Cofidis team has used the latest wheels, this is a picture of Christian Moreni taken by GonaSovereign from WeightWeenies.

EDIT 2: thanks to a better quality picture, we can see that the rim weave has changed compared to the first prototypes built, it looks more like the old Corima rims meaning a small weave.

Mavic website also informs us of the existence of the new wheels saying that Cofidis team really appreciate them.
Link.
While the firsts prototypes were built before November 2005, Mavic finally make the existence of the wheels public!

Tour de France, Phonak [en]

The components used by professionnals teams during the Tour de France 2006 are mostly exclusive. In this first part, we share with you some pictures of the Phonak team Philippe could take at the prologue that took place in Strasbourg.

The road bikes equipped with custom wheels based upon Zipp 250, 285 or 360 rims, aerolite spokes and DtSwiss 240s hubs are awesome bikes whose frame uses nanotechnology. Roues Artisanales already published an article about this frame last year (unfortunately only in french at this time).

Some wheels are using Powertap hub that gives the rider output power via a comptuter with a basic appearance.

Phonak time trial bikes are certainly amongst the most beautiful bikes of the Tour! Furthermore the very aerodynamic frame/fork/wheels setup, carbon aero crankarms made by BMC from a Campagnolo Record crankset help the bike to keep a very high speed.

Certaines roues sont équipées du moyeu Powertap qui enregistre la puissance et retransmet directement les informations au coureur par le biais d’un compteur à l’apparence classique;

Zipp 2007, Record 2007 crankset installation guide

Zipp 2007

The Tour de France has begun since a few days and the first new parts could be spotted on the bikes. For example, CSC team has got some new Z serie wheels using the dimpled hub we once talked in this article.

These hubs will only be used on the Z series wheels since they’re very expensive to make and improve again the aero of the wheels. After varying dimple depths, densities and diameters they found the best compromise allowing a drag decrease. The logo on the hub doesn’t affect at all the aero of the wheel.

According to the test done at 30mph on 808 wheels with 21mm tubies both with dimpled hub and normal hub at Texas A&M by graduate students, the hub saves the equivalent of  3W when the wind is from 0 to 10°.

The Ultra torque crankset installation guide can be found on the official Campagnolo website, have a look at it. It’s useful if you’re going to buy the new crankset.

Crossmax 2007 [en]

The latest Mavic Crossmax SLR have been seen on a picture of the website Canadiancyclist. The look is almost similar to the road wheels known as Ksyrium ES. A red hub with a black rim and black spokes. We don’t have more informations at the moment but it seems there aren’t a lot of improvement here… We hope to be able to tell you more in some days.

Mavic Full Carbon [en]

One of our most faithful reader made for Roues Artisanales a drawing of the new Mavic wheel we should see in a few days. A Lightweight challenger, we hope they’ll be cheaper than them to compete them!

Orbea Orca 2007, Zipp new hubs, Zero Gravity

Orbea 2007

The new Orbea Orca that will be available the next year has got smoother but also bulkier lines than the current model. It should be stiffer as well.
Foromtb.com was nice to share with us the picture.

Zipp 2007

Zipp will use dimpled new hubs for its next wheel line. Phonak and CSC top riders already sometimes use them in good conditions. Zipp claims these new hubs save 3 Watts over the current hubs when the wind is at 0 to 15°.

Zero Gravity

Zero Gravity crankset we’re all waiting so much is announced available earl in 2007. After many months to be developped and tested under every conditions, this part with a very special geometry will finally reach the production lines. We already wrote something about this crankset a few months ago (see here) will use a custom Zero Gravity bottom bracket spinning on Phil Wood bearings.

Tuned precision Billet derailleur

Today I’d like to present you a Precision Billet rear derailleur tuned by hand by Alex and presented on Fairwheelbikes forum.

The work he has done is simply awesome. He made the carbon fiber parts while laminating together various carbon cut-offs to get the right thickness, he milled, filed, drilled the parts to obtain almost the exact same shape.

That was a very long work since the main body parts each required several hours, the jockey wheel cage was around one hour and the titanium pins were 5 minutes each.

Final weight is 130gr.

Fibre-Lyte carbon chainrings, 2nd part

Fibre-Lyte carbon chainrings Roues Artisanales got from Fairwheelbikes have been used for a bit more than 35h meaning approximately 1200kmn, races included (from national to 1.2 level) mainly on the big ring.

First observation; the wear isn’t visible and the teeth are still in excellent shape.

Contrary to what I told in this first article, the lack of stiffness compared to normal chainrings isn’t perceptible. It’s actually a huge lack of stiffness from the frame that bends easily even under small loads.

Then, I stood the shifting qualities were improved, actually this improvement is brought to a new chain. Indeed, I switched from a FSA alloy chainrings/Record chain setup to a Fibre-Lyte/Record CR (5.9mm) setup. I could notice that the shifting improvement was caused by this thinner chain since mounting back the alloy chainrings while keeping this thin chain made very quick chainrings changes, quicker than with the carbon chainring/Record CR chain setup.

The First issue with the big chainring occurred some days ago because of a damaged tooth. According to Martin from Fibre-Lyte, the problem is caused by the chain that has loaded the teeth on its top instead of being one side or the other. The strain has been concentrated at the top of a tooth instead of the whole tooth.

It’s a minor problem with no impact on the safety.
It can be solved by cleaning the break up with some oxide paper/ sand paper to make the tooth smooth.

Next update about them in some weeks.

Plateaux carbone Fibre Lyte; 2ème partie
